Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
